Résumé :
This paper focuses on issues related to GIS applications in
international health and development. The author reviews some of the recent developments
in electronic atlases and geographical population databases for health and population
activities. Various strategies are considered, and the experience of the United Nations
Statistics Division is reviewed in the light of the PopMap software development and
dissemination.
The paper offers an in-depth overview of PopMap and MapScan its companion program. After
looking at the historical setting, the software development framework, and the software
main features, the strengths and limitations of such an approach are examined in the
context of the United Nations technical cooperation programme to support population
activities in developing countries.
