-1- Rappel: Ce jeudi 27 juin
----------------------------
-2- Call for participation to the seminar
-----------------------------------------
The semester is now over, and a new session will start on September 5 with
Olivia Ekert from INED. The seminar worked well this year mainly because
of your participation. We are pleased to invite you during a trip to
Europe and Paris to give a talk on a Thursday afternoon (2pm to 3pm) at
INED. If most presentation are in french, the audience understand
english. Audience ranged from 12 people to 42 (statistics are included in
the "old" program on the Web) with an average of 20 people each week.
We have some funds to help researchers to stay in Paris and
give a talk at the seminar. Please mail or fax us your proposition. On
June 27, the program is very open (Marc Artzrouni is giving a talk on
October 3).

-3- ----TECHNICAL INFORMATIONS-----------
ACCENTED CHARACTERS.
We are sending our mail using the MIME protocol which is widely use now
because of the WEB's spread. It means that in
the header of our mail we send the following lines:
Mime-Version: 1.0
Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=ISO-8859-1
Content-Transfer-Encoding: QUOTED-PRINTABLE
If you see these lines on top of your mail it is probably bad luck. If
not, then it means that the lines have been processed and interpreted by
your mail browser. It may have been badly interpreted:
This MIME protocol means that a real (8 bits) e-acute sent by us has been
translated to =E9 for the transfer. It should reach your local mailer (a
UNIX machine generally) unchanged. Only your PC (under DOS or WINDOWS) or
MAC or terminal or Work station mail browser has to change the =E9 into an
e-acute corresponding to your screen.
The ISO-8859-1 is adapted world-wide by WINDOWS (not by DOS), and UNIX
workstation. The Macintosh uses its own standard, so your mailer has to
translate an ISO-8859-1 e-acute into an MAC e-acute, otherwise you get an
upper E-grave and your mailer has to be upgraded. On simple terminals the
8th bit should not be inhibited otherwise the e-acute (ISO8859-1) is
echoed locally as an ASCII (7 bits) i. This is the same thing for
printers; printers have to be 8 bits and to understand the ISO8859-1
codes. Otherwise you need local converters, but this is done correctly
now on modern WINDOWS and UNIX drivers.
Hope it will help.
